Past and Present Ordinaries

No records are extant of the early period of the Maltese Church history. Only tradition holds that Christianity was introduced in Malta by St Paul during his wintering in the Maltese harbours after the shipwreck c. Nov 60 AD, as related in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 27-28)

Scanty archaeological remains have proved that Christianity might have been established here about the seventh century after the Christian era.

The diocese of Malta, in later years, was raised to a suffraganea of the metropolitan Cathedral of Palermo, by a Papal Bull of Adrian IV dated 10th July 1156, and confirmed by Alexander III on 26th April 1160.

By a Papal Brief, dated 3rd March 1797, Bishop Vincenzo Labini and all his successors in the diocese of Malta, were given the title of Bishop of Malta and Archbishop of Rhodes. This privilege was suppressed in 1928, and the title was changed to Archbishop, Bishop of Malta. The diocese of Malta was separated from the Archdiocese of Palermo on 20th June 1831. Pius XII raised the diocese of Malta to a Metropolitan See in 1944.

The political, social, economic and ecclesiastical conditions of the Maltese islands must be studied in the contemporary history of Sicily, because they were exposed to the same internal and external influence.

There are many gaps in the list of the Bishops of Malta. Those dates marked with an asterisk (*) refer to the first reference not date of appointment. Records dating from 1432 are based on documentary evidence only.
